Exclusive interview – Focus Gaming News sat down with Sarah Micallef, the visionary behind the iGaming Legacy Awards, to explore the purpose and principles that set these awards apart in the competitive iGaming landscape.
The gaming industry hosts numerous award ceremonies celebrating growth, innovation, and performance. Yet, the iGaming Legacy Awards stand out by recognising a different kind of achievement — one rooted in ethics, sustainability, and lasting cultural impact.
Micallef shared how the idea emerged, her mission to honour integrity and positive influence, and how the initiative combines recognition with social contribution.
What inspired the creation of the iGaming Legacy Awards, and why now?
The iGaming Legacy Awards were conceived to celebrate individuals and organisations shaping the industry’s future through integrity, responsibility, and purpose — not just commercial success. As iGaming continues to expand and evolve, there’s a growing need to highlight those driving progress ethically and sustainably.
With new challenges and opportunities emerging daily, this was the perfect moment to acknowledge those who are not only succeeding but also setting new standards for what responsible leadership in iGaming should look like.

The industry already features several awards. How do the Legacy Awards stand out?
While many awards focus on results — such as innovation, marketing, and revenue growth — the iGaming Legacy Awards take a broader perspective. They recognise the people and organisations whose actions influence the industry’s culture, social responsibility, and long-term direction.
We fill an important gap by celebrating leaders who make purposeful choices, nurture ethical practices, and prioritise community impact. The goal isn’t just to reward short-term achievement, but to acknowledge those creating a positive, enduring legacy that continues to shape iGaming’s evolution.
“We honour leaders who drive responsible progress and contribute meaningfully to the wider community.”
— Sarah Micallef, Founder of the iGaming Legacy Awards
You often mention culture, heritage, and human values as guiding principles. How do these influence your award criteria?
Culture and values form the backbone of our approach. Each category is designed to recognise leadership that extends beyond financial performance — focusing instead on inclusion, mentorship, ethical conduct, and commitment to sustainability.
When assessing nominees, we look for qualities like transparency, compassion, and respect for the industry’s roots. The idea is to highlight those who don’t just aim for success but strive to build workplaces and communities that uplift others.
This ensures our recognition reflects not only what’s achieved, but how it’s achieved — placing humanity and integrity at the centre of every award.
The awards also support charitable causes. Can you elaborate on that?
Yes, philanthropy is integral to the iGaming Legacy Awards. Every participation fee goes directly toward supporting homeless shelters across Malta and the Richmond Foundation, which provides essential services for individuals facing mental health challenges.
We believe that recognising success must also involve giving back. By supporting these causes, the awards make a tangible difference in people’s lives — reinforcing the spirit of community and empathy that drives our entire mission.

How do you see these awards shaping the future of the iGaming industry?
The iGaming Legacy Awards are designed to spotlight leadership that values sustainable impact over temporary gain. As the sector continues to innovate with new technologies and talent, our goal is to help set standards for ethical growth and responsible creativity.
By highlighting those who champion fair play, diversity, and accountability, we hope to influence the industry’s future — one where innovation thrives alongside trust and social awareness.
What legacy do you want the iGaming Legacy Awards themselves to leave?
My vision is for the iGaming Legacy Awards to be remembered as more than an annual event — but as a movement that drives long-term positive change.
If these awards can inspire industry professionals to think deeply about their role, their influence, and their duty to future generations, that will be their true success.
Ultimately, I want them to stand as a lasting reminder that leadership built on ethics, empathy, and purpose will always outshine quick wins.
“My hope is that these awards become a symbol of transformation — a call for lasting, meaningful progress within iGaming.”
